Myth Busting #3: Why Just Exercising Isn’t Enough
Exercise is great. But if you think you can out-run a bad diet, the research has some uncomfortable news for you.
MYTH
Exercise is the key to weight loss.
FACT
Studies consistently show that exercise alone, without dietary changes, produces modest weight loss at best, often just 2-3 lbs over several months. Diet changes produce significantly more.
MYTH
The calories burned on my fitness tracker are accurate.
FACT
Fitness trackers and gym machines consistently overestimate calories burned by 20-90%. That post-workout snack you "earned" likely wiped out the deficit entirely.
MYTH
If I work out hard enough, I can eat whatever I want.
FACT
A 30-minute run burns roughly 300 calories. A large fast food meal contains 1,200. The math does not favor the treadmill.
Why Exercise Still Matters A Lot
Â
The real benefits of regular exercise have almost nothing to do with weight:

-
Reduces risk of heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers
-
As effective as antidepressants for mild to moderate depression in some studies
-
Improves insulin sensitivity, directly relevant to obesity prevention
-
Builds muscle mass, which supports long-term metabolic health
-
Improves sleep quality and reduces chronic inflammation
Â
The Bottom Line
Exercise is non-negotiable for your health. It is not a permission slip to eat anything you want, or a replacement for diet.
