Myth Busting #4: Debunking Diet Trends
Every year brings a new wave of diet trends promising rapid transformation. Most are repackaged ideas that have already failed millions of people. Here is a breakdown of them:
MYTH
Intermittent fasting is a metabolic hack that burns fat faster than regular dieting.
FACT
It works for some people, primarily because it reduces overall calorie intake, not because of metabolic magic. A 2022 NEJM study found no significant advantage over standard calorie restriction. It can also trigger disordered eating in those prone to restriction.
MYTH
Keto is the most effective diet for weight loss.
FACT
Keto produces rapid early weight loss, but this is mostly water weight. Long-term studies show that it performs no better than other reduced-calorie diets. It’s also very restrictive, eliminating fiber-rich foods, and it is also difficult to sustain.
MYTH
Juice cleanses detox your body and reset your metabolism.
FACT
Your Liver and kidneys detox your body continuously. Juice cleanses spike blood sugar, provide minimal protein, cause muscle loss, and cost a lot of money. Any weight loss is water, which returns immediately.
MYTH
Eating alkaline foods change your body’s pH and improve health.
FACT
Your body maintains blood pH within an extremely narrow range, regardless of what you eat. If your blood pH actually changed, you’d be in a medical emergency.
The Bottom Line

The best diet includes mostly whole foods, adequate protein and fiber, and is sustainable enough to become your normal way of eating, and not just a temporary intervention. It is boring, but effective.
